Sunday 22nd January

The Brass Monkey is a popular half marathon which starts and finishes at York racecourse. The route is flat and fast, heading southwards through Bishopthorpe,  Acaster Selby, Appleton Roebuck and back through Bishopthorpe to finish outside the Racecourse. Entries for the event become available in October and, such is the popularity of the event, the 2000 or so entries are taken in a single day.

This year, five Tynedale Harriers were lucky enough to gain entries and travelled south to take part. The wearther was bright and dry but the wind was a major factor throughout.

First for the Club was Ronnie Coupland in a time of 85:26 closely followed by Peter Hearn in a time of 86:14.  Ian Marsden had set off with Ronnie to run the distance at an even pace as part of their marathon build up but Ian fell back at the halfway mark and came in just behind Ian Brown in 88:36. IanB maintained a steady pace throughout and was delighted with his time of 87:54. Joanne Lee was the only Tynedale lady and Joanne was also pleased with her time of 89:08 although well short of her best on this course.

Congratulations also to Peter’s son, Sam Hearn who was  running in this his first Half Marathon and recorded an outstanding time of 79:39.
